Nile Rodgers and Marva Smalls, Executive VP of Public Affairs and Chief of Staff of Nickelodeon were honored on June 16, 2005 at the annual Northside Center for Child Development awards gala.

Nile received the Hammond Award, in honor of the legendary musician and music producer John Hammond, a founding board member and lifelong Northside friend. The award was presented to Nile by Northside President, Michael Goldstein, and a surprise guest – CHIC's lead vocalist, Sylver Logan Sharp, for his contribution to the world of music and his dedication to the work of the We Are Family Foundation. Sylver wrote and performed a special musical dedication to both Nile and the work of Northside.

Northside Center for Child Development was established in 1946 by Drs. Kenneth and Mamie Phipps Clark, the preeminent psychologists whose groundbreaking research exposing the insidious effects of segregation and racism on the intellectual and emotional development of children helped drive the Supreme Court's historic “Brown v. Board of Education” ruling in 1954. At the time the Clarks founded Northside, they could not have foreseen that almost 60 years later Northside would become a multi-site agency, serving more than 1,600 children and families with mental health, education and evaluation and referral services.
